Okay this is going to be a long socially distanced winter. To try and replace our tie and lies this year where I always pick up a new fly to tie. How about everyone post their most successful fly for each prime fishing month of the year. That may spur some of us to tie and later fish a new fly we might not try. Here goes:
May- Montreal Whore
June- Green Caddis Larva
July- Goddard Caddis
August- Klinkhammer
September- White Wulff
October- Golden Retriever
Looking forward to tying some patterns I normally don't fish.
You all stay well.
I replied; but the reply didn’t show up. This is getting ridiculous
I’ll try one more time:
May: Sparkle Dun
June: Emergent Sparkle Caddis
July: Pmd’s
August: Sunken Trico Spinners
September: BH PT Nymph
October: Orange Bead Black Egg Sucking Flash A Bugger
November: Same as October or Gartside Olive Soft Hackle Streamer

Man...how could I be so wrong? I use NONE of these!
May- Holt fly/Floating smelt
June- P Tail CDC
July- spent caddis
August- Shad dart in yellow
September- Orange Soft hackle
October- Red Brassie
November- Orange Egg
Pretty amazing what works for different people. Was hoping to draw a few others in so we could all compare. I'm sure it makes a big difference where we fish as to what our favorites are. For example I always try to fish GLS the last week of the season there. That would make me want to use flies that might not be as popular at Upper Dam in Rangeley in the fall. Keep 'em coming - I need tying inspiration!
Hmmm...
May. Black Leech
June. Black leech
July. Black leech
August. Black leech
Sept. Black Leech
Oct. Black leech
Nov. Black Leech
Makes Filling my fly box easy!😜
Interesting more for what’s missing as for what’s here. For example, no elk hair caddis, no Hendrickson or BWO, no royal coachman, and no Adams. I still carry all of those but wonder what changed For everyone.
Well Tim; if you look at my list you’ll note that my generic Sparkle Dun could be a Hendrickson; BWO; or Adams in appropriate body colors.
My LaFontaine Sparkle Caddis is really a modified low floating EHC.
I put on my list generic, rather than specific, patterns.
I’d also guess Hutch might use a Sparkle Dun, or a Bugger, too

I wrote only the most used fly...but not what I use exclusively. On a typical day, I change flies 100 times....or so it feels. I am firmly in the school of "if it doesn't work in 8-10 casts- change flies/depth/retrieve".
Adams tilt wing went into the box last year, and will stay. Haven't used an AL Troth Elk hair in a decade...deer hair and no hackle for me..
Yup, I’m a changer too. My earlier comment might just be my age showing. I grew up with the flies I listed as being sacred. In fact I can remember days at Shawmut when a female Hendrickson was more effective than a male Hendrickson. With Sparkle Duns being effective in imitating so many naturals, it’s interesting that the long-ago male/female distinction was even an issue. Maybe the bugs/environment have changed?
Mine would go something like this (note that I'm not in Maine most of the season these days) --
March -- brooks sprout midge
April -- Para adams
May -- para adams
June -- Dungeon
July -- Dungeon/Para Adams
August -- Trico
September -- Para adams
October -- BWO
November -- BWO

I know. Sad isn't it? I suppose it's tough times for some and us retirees wonder why. Here's hoping for better times in the coming year.
Dave: Even when the forum was in the old format, it wasn't a real barn burner in terms of postings. But I have to say (and I feel a little guilty saying it since someone else is doing all the work) that this forum in its current format and host is awkward. The format is cute, but hard to track new posts and more fussy than it needs to be. Again, just my opinion. But coming here is not the easy "just drop by" that it used to be. I'm only here now because I received an email note about your post. In spite of that, I'm grateful for the slim connection the site allows to all of you.
Tim,
Youre absolutely right. It’s just so much easier to go and post on the Facebook Groups threads. The new format, I’m sad to say, just isn’t “user friendly” as the old format was.
Suffering from the same sort of new forum issues. Just not used to it, I guess. Typed a post and wasn't signed in. It prompted me to sign in and I did but the post was gone. The good part is I'll be signed in the next time I type a post. :-)
Anyway, what I had typed is that I've been thinking about the flies I used this summer. It was an odd summer for me because right from the start, high cold water, through to ice forming I fished most of the time using Davy Wotton's three fly techniques (often only two flies - wind) and the two flies that really stood out were Davy's Muddler Daddy (with the Double-Knotted legs) and the Invicta.
It was a good season to try these techniques because (for me) the hatches sucked. One thing I found out was that keeping one fly dancing on and off the water without pulling the anchor fly to the top is a real trick.
