September Stripers with Coastal Fly Angler

9/11/2005: I was fortunate enough to spend a morning on the water today with our friendly moderator tim_s and Capt. Eric Wallace of Coastal Fly Angler, chasing stripers on the fall feed in Casco Bay. As I was driving into the boat landing parking lot at 5:30 AM, the sun was just beginning to glow on the distant horizon and a nip in the air woke the spirit. I was delighted to see bait busting on the surface in the marina area as I stepped out of my car, I knew then this was going to be a special day.

We said our good mornings quickly, and geared up and headed out. Within 10 minutes we were casting to busting fish as the sun was creeping it's way up to peek at us, lighting the morning sky a glow of orange to the east. Capt. Eric poled us along the flats as we began to pick up dozens of school-sized Striped Bass amongst the vast schools of busting bait. We couldn't believe the amount of bait in the water! There were bunker everywhere, the Stripers were having a field day and so were we.

Between Tim and myself, we boated over 50 fish in just 4 hours of casting. What a resource we have here in the Southern Maine area...and most of the day we had not a single other boat in sight. Although we didn't land any monsters this day...we did get into plenty of action with plenty of schoolies, including some slot-sized fish.

Capt. Eric fishes out of a 16' Mako flats boat with an open deck that is made for fly casting. If you've never been sight-fishing for Stripers before from a nimble flats boat, poled by a seasoned guide...do yourself a favor, and give Coastal Fly Angler a call.
