Destination Spotlight: Rangeley, ME

Located in the heart of Maine's Western Mountains lies fly fishing mecca of historical proportions. Yes, Rangeley is the name of the town at the northern end of the lake by the same name, but it is also known to anglers as an area of fruitful water stretching west to the Magalloway River along the New Hampshire border, and north into the rustic woods up to Kennebago Lake. Not to mention the major lakes of Mooselookmeguntic, and the Richardsons, along with the world class Rapid River.

This past spring, I was lucky enough to spend a couple of nights in a beautiful condo (click here for booking info) right in town Rangeley, close to some of the local eatery and watering-hole establishments. We spent some time exploring on the upper and lower portions of the Magalloway River, above and below Aziscohos Lake, respectively. Another day was spend chasing Brookies of mythic proportions along the middle sections of the Rapid River. The smaller fish were many to net, and several between 16-20" were landed as well. Other spots folks might try are the Kennebago River, Upper Dam Pool, or one of the numerous trout-filled ponds in the area.

Take the time and check out Rangeley...you won't be disappointed!
