Grant Winner -- "Live the Legend"

The Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen's Association (RRG&SA) was selected to be a recipient of a 2006 FFIM Grant for funds to be used in the establishment of an exciting new program that partners teenagers and fly-fishing with mentoring, fly-casting skill development, conservation awareness and statewide education. This new program will be called "Live the Legend".

"Live the Legend", is designed to focus on teens, ages 13-15. The program will promote fly-fishing through a hands-on experience session, and contribute to the education of natural resource conservation, regional history, fisheries management and self-fulfillment. Personal experiences will transmit mentoring to participant's peers on a local and statewide level, where deliverables from the program will sustainably demonstrate the relationship between fishing, education, history and conservation.

The program will facilitate a three day, two night tour which includes fly-fishing the Rapid River, Middle Dam tailrace and Kennebago Lake. Two Maine Professional Guides, a representative from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and a representative from the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen's Association will accompany the trip. The project will deliver coverage on a MDIFW television show and a movie/video of the event (available to regional schools and incorporated into summer youth programs throughout the State of Maine).

It is anticipated that 4-5 teens, one from each of the regional schools in proximity to the Rangeley Lakes Region, to participate in the program. Each student will be selected based on a brief essay they will submit by February 2006. Their essay will describe their personal outdoor experiences and why the "Live the Legend" tour would benefit their growth as an outdoorsman/outdoorswoman.

Each teen will be outfitted with a flyrod/reel combo, vest and waders. It is proposed that a generous contribution from a major outfitter will furnish this equipment to the teens to keep forever. If the proposal is declined, the RRG&SA will provide a complete loaner outfit to utilize for the Tour.
