Rapid River Bass Harvest - June 12, 2004
Save the Brookies!!!
The time has come. We've set up the general rules and gotten most of the permission out of the way.

The "Derby" day will be Saturday so that we can give out prizes at the Banquet. Harvest will be ongoing throughout the weekend.

Things to think about:

Watercraft - - small canoes, kayaks, float tubes or cartops. Motors that can be walked in if neccessary.

Car/Van/Buspooling - It's very important that we create as little traffic into Pond inthe River as possible. It's not that great a road.

Derby/Harvest access will all be on the south side of Pond in the River. Plan to access by the East B Hill Road.

Dan and the gang are planning all kinds of surprises at the Sat night get together.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the South Shore!!!

- Jeff Levesque (Jeffus), Bass Derby/Harvest Coordinator

Letter to Bass Derby Participants:

Dear Bass Derby Participants,

Thank you for volunteering to give up a day of trout fishing to help harvest smallmouth bass in Pond in the River. Over 35 people have signed up for the event, and we wanted to give you a heads up about the logistics. Because of the large number participants, limited access, and the requirements in our collector's permit from MDIFW, we need to closely coordinate the event, and our travel to and from Pond in the River.

So that we can be sensitive to needs of other sportsmen and businesses on the Rapid River, participants in the Bass Derby will be accessing Pond in the River (PIR) from the East B Hill access site only. Derby participants will not be able to access PIR from the Middle Dam Gate which will be closed. We are asking that Derby participants travel to PIR from the East B Hill Gate together. Parking at PIR is extremely limited, so we will need to limit the number of vehicles as much as possible. We encourage you to carpool and identify fishing partners prior to departure on Saturday morning. To help with this, we have secured at least one van and several canoe trailers. If you have a high-capacity vehicle and are willing to provide transportation, please contact Jeff Levesque at Jeffus@GWI.net and let him know or post on the site..

We hope to start the Bass Derby about 10:00am, which will mean leaving from Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsman's Assoc.(RRG &SA) Clubhouse at 8:15am. Saturday morning. Dan Tarkinson and Jeff Reardon will be coordinating assembly at the Clubhouse. Directions to the Clubhouse can be found on Flyfishinginmaine.com. We will have the canoe trailers available earlier. Please make plans with other participants in advance for carpooling. We need to limit ourselves to as few vehicles as possible due to limited and anticipated heavy use by other anglers.

FFIM has arranged for toilet facilities at the PIR site.

A couple of other details. First, you will really need a canoe or kayak to access the bass spawning areas. These will be identified by a Scuba Survey currently being conducted by the MDIF&W this week. Please bring a small watercratf, or arrange to fish with someone else who has one. If you don't have access to one, notify Jeffus and Dan by Thursday as a limited number will be available on-site. Second, for safety reasons, we are requesting that all participants wear life jackets at all times.

Staff from MDIFW will meet us at Pond in the River to go over the rules in our collectors permits and to brief us on areas where spawning smallmouth congregate. They will also let us know which areas are "off limits" to protect trout and salmon from "bycatch". You can expect a presence from the Warden's Service. Any angler fishing ALO and not listed on the Collector's Permit will be cited. Any Angler fishing ALO outside of the designated areas will be cited.

Our apologies for turning a day of fishing into a bureaucratic hassle, but there are people who have raised concerns about the event and its impact on the Rapid River trout resource and on other users. These rules are designed to keep those impacts to a minimum, and to ensure your safety. Let's not let Dan down, let's show 'em how the FFIM crew can get things done. Also remember many of us are representing other sporting groups like TU, SAM and others. Let's show them how real sportsfolk can conduct themselves!

Now let's get out there and SAVE SOME BROOKIES!

Thank you,

Dan Tarkinson, Jeff Levesque and the rest of the FFIM Crew

 Register
You must register in advance in order to participate in the official bass derby event on Saturday. MDIF&W will be requiring a list of all participants, and those who are signed up may be allowed to use ALO - single hook only - lures in an attempt to target bass. Anglers in the derby will not be allowed to target trout with ALO, and this will be aggressivly enforced.
